India aims to reduce dependency on coal imports, starting from brining it down by 2% in the next fiscal year, as per Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi. Coal imports declined from 26% (FY'20) to 21% in the current fiscal. India foresees a coal surplus by FY'26, except for some high-quality coal and coking coal required for steel sector and imported coal-based power plants. Power demand is expected to hit 355 GW by FY'30, with coal-fired generation contributing 72%.
