Brazilian mining giant Vale has officially inaugurated the world's first iron ore briquette plant in Vitoria, Brazil. This groundbreaking facility marks a significant leap towards a more sustainable and efficient steelmaking process.
This plant has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the blast furnace by up to 10% or making it possible to produce zero-emission steel with green hydrogen in the future.
Vale will play a pivotal role by implementing decarbonization plan, which is a 27% reduction by 2030, 50% by 2040 and 100% by 2050.
The plants of Vale has the capacity to produce 6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The response from Europe and The Middle-East-based companies are showing interest in receiving shipments of briquette in 2024. It is expected that in 2024, the two Tubarao plants will produce around 2.5 million tonnes (mnt).
The inauguration of this briquette plant is a key step in Vale's ambition to slash value chain (scope 3) emissions by 15% by 2035. It is not just about one plant, though. Vale has already partnered with over 50 major clients responsible for 35% of those emissions, exploring solutions like on-site briquette plants to achieve this ambitious goal.
