USA: Manganese alloys imports down by 36% m-o-m in Apr'23

Manganese alloys imports by the US decreased by 36% m-o-m to 41,291 tonnes (t) in April 2023 against 64,104 t in March. The drop in imports was due to a 3% y-o-y decline in domestic crude steel production to 33.1 million tonnes (mnt) in January-April 2023 in comparison with the same period last year.

Sub-commodity-wise break-up

Ferro manganese
The US imported 22,479 t of ferro manganese in April 2023 compared to 24,061 t in March 2023. Ferro manganese imports fell by 7% m-o-m. Imports of the commodity fell amid liquidity crunches and low special steel demand. Malaysia (10,454 t) was the leading exporter to the US, followed by Norway (8,264 t) in April. Meanwhile, yearly imports of ferro manganese dropped by 17% to 97,999 t in January-April 2023 against 118,012 t in January-April 2022.

Silico manganese
Silico manganese imports fell drastically by 53% m-o-m to 18,812 t in April 2023 from 40,043 t in March 2023. The major exporting nations were Australia at 7,681 t, followed by Georgia at 5,350 t, and Mexico at 2,968 t, during April. Imports declined by 35% y-o-y to 106,690 t in January-April 2023 against 164,190 t in January-April 2022.
