USA: Ferrous Scrap Exports Down by 3% M-o-M in Nov'19

The United States, one of the major steel producers in the world, witnessed a slight decrease in its ferrous scrap exports in Nov'19. Scrap export volume decreased by 3% M-o-M to 1.47 MnT in Nov'19 from 1.52 MnT a month back in Sept'19, according to data maintained with SteelMint. On a yearly basis, exports increased by 4% from 1.41 MnT during the same month last year.
Turkey remains the largest importer of ferrous scrap with 29% of share in the total scrap exported by the USA in Nov'19. The country increased its scrap imports by 26% to 0.43 MnT in Nov'19 as against 0.34 MnT of scrap imported in Oct'19. Notably, this is the highest monthly export by USA to Turkey since Sept'17 when it had imported 0.55 MnT of scrap.
Followed by other major importers such as Taiwan, Bangladesh & Mexico which imported 0.19 MnT (up by 6%), 0.16 MnT (up by 167%) and 0.11 MnT (down by 39%) respectively.
The country witnessed an increase its exports of coal & iron ore, while exports of finish flat & long steel have observed fall in Nov'19, as per recent data released by the customs department.
Coal: US coal exports ended a series a decline to record an increase of 6% M-o-M to 9.75 MnT during Nov'19, driver by an uptick in non-coking coal shipments. Although, coal volumes continued the fall Y-o-Y for the 10th consecutive month, as it was marked 18% lower on the year from 11.87 MnT in Nov'18.
Demand for US coal has remained subdued where lower exports to Europe, India and South Korea have more than offset the impact of a modest rise in exports to Japan and Latin America.
India and Japan remained the major coal receiver from the US in Nov'19. Indian coal imports attained a 6-month high total of 1.41 MnT during Nov'19, as it increased 5% M-o-M from 1.34 MnT in Oct'19. While coal intake by Japan rose 16% M-o-M to 1.11 MnT in Nov'19.
Canada emerged as the third-largest coal receiver in the month with imports of 0.74 MnT. During the first 11 months of CY19 (Jan-Nov'19), US coal exports have dropped 15% Y-o-Y to 113.3 MnT as against 133.7 Mnt noted in the year-ago period.
Iron Ore: United States iron ore exports for the month of Nov'19 witnessed at 0.95 MnT, up 4% as against 0.91 MnT in Oct'19. The exports have increased amid global material availability crises created by Vale amid dealing with the aftermath of the Jan'19 disaster. The exports stood stable Y-o-Y as against Nov'18 exports at 0.95 MnT. For CY19 (Jan-Nov'19), exports witnessed at 10.66 MnT, down 11% as against 11.97 MnT in CY18 (Jan- Nov'18).
Canada marked the largest importer of US iron ore for the month at 0.77 MnT, up 5% against 0.73 MnT in Oct'19. Japan stood second-largest importer at 0.12 MnT followed by the United Kingdom at 0.05 MnT.
Finish Long: Finish long export from the USA witnessed a fall by 16% M-o-M in Nov'19, exporting 0.07 MnT as compared to 0.08 MnT exported in Oct'19. On a yearly basis too, finish long exports remained stable from 0.07 MnT exported a year ago in Nov'18.
Canada remained the largest importer with 57% share in total finish long steel exported by the USA, as it imported 0.04 MnT in Nov'19, down by 20% M-o-M from 0.05 MnT imported in Oct'19. Mexico- another major importer, importing a 0.02 MnT for the last three consecutive months-Sept, Oct & Nov'19 each.
Finish Flat: The United States' finish flat export volume moved down by 16% to 0.41MnT in Nov'19 as compared with 0.49 in Oct'19. On a yearly premise, flat steel exports remained stable in Nov'19 in comparison with 0.42 MnT exported in Nov'18.
The United States' finish flat exports to Mexico, decreasing by 27% to 0.19 MnT in Nov'19, which was 0.26 MnT in Oct'19. Meanwhile, exports to Canada in Nov'19 slightly moved down by 5% to 0.18 MnT in the month.
