US: Manganese alloys imports fall 34% m-o-m in Jan'23

Manganese alloys imports by the US decreased nearly 34% m-o-m to 80,413 tonnes (t) in January 2023 from 121,941 t in December 2022. The drop was due to a 7% y-o-y decline in domestic crude steel production to 6.5 million tonnes (mnt) in January 2023.

Ferro manganese
The US imported 40,044 t of ferro manganese in January 2023 compared to 65,449 t in December 2022, down by 39% m-o-m. Due to a high level of domestic stock-holding, and low special steel production, ferro manganese imports dropped. However, yearly imports of ferro manganese surged by 135% in January 2023 against 17,037 t in January 2022 last year.

Silico manganese
Silico manganese imports by the US decreased by 29% m-o-m to 40,360 t in January 2023 from 56,492 t in December 2022. However, imports rose 36% y-o-y in January 2023 against 29,615 t in January 2022. The major exporting nations were South Africa at 18,180 t, Australia at 9,116 t, and Malaysia at 4,760 t. Shipments from Georgia stood at 4,249 t, during the month.
