United States Scrap Exports To Vietnam Hit 9 Year High in Sept'18

United States - world's second largest exporter of ferrous scrap after EU-28 has witnessed sharp rise in exports to Vietnam in CY18. According to customs data maintained with SteelMint, United States exported 174,249 MT ferrous scrap to Vietnam in Sept'18, hitting last 9 year highest monthly volume on record.
As per recent customs data, United States exported 1,258,913 MT ferrous scrap in Sept'18 as against 1,532,817 MT exports recorded in Aug'18. On yearly premises, exports inched down in Sept'18 as against 1,271,992 MT exports recorded in Sept'17.
Portwise - Top loading ports in US for scrap shipping activities in Sept'18 were Los Angeles (0.33 MnT), New York City (0.25 MnT), San Francisco (0.07 MnT), Philadelphia (0.06 MnT), Laredo (0.06 MnT), Boston (0.05 MnT) and Seattle (0.04 MnT).
Turkey remained the largest importer in Sept'18 - After observing fall in imports on currency depreciation Turkey based importers turned active again for Sept'18 shipments. Turkey imported 351,806 MT ferrous scrap, up 17% M-o-M as against 299,578 MT in Aug'18. While China's dull appetite for US scrap continued amid stricter trade and inspection regulations in the country, importing just 16,491 MT in Sept'18.
Vietnam stepped up at second largest importer position in Sept'18 and imported 174,249 MT, up 143% M-o-M. Followed by South Korea (124,913 MT) as the third largest importer in Sept'18. Taiwan imported 124,520 MT ferrous scrap in Sept'18, down 29% M-o-M as against 174,496 MT ferrous scrap in Aug'18.
Other major importers were Mexico (86,583 MT, - 40% M-o-M), Canada (75,765 MT, +33% M-o-M), Bangladesh (68,190 MT, stable M-o-M) and Egypt (38,014 MT, -73% M-o-M). India imported 54,179 MT ferrous scrap in Sept'18 as against 38,507 MT in Aug'18.
USA scrap exports up 20% during Jan-Sept'18 - During first nine months of CY18, United States exported 12.39 MnT ferrous scrap, up considerably 20% Y-o-Y as against 10.31 MnT during Jan-Sept'17. Almost all major importers except China observed considerable rise in scrap imports from USA as against the same period last year.
