Turkey: Ferrous Scrap Imports Down 2% on Q3 CY19

Turkish ferrous scrap imports witnessed a marginal decrease by 2% Q-o-Q to 5.02 MnT in Q3 '19 as compared to 5.11 MnT in Q2'19. Meanwhile, on yearly premises, the same has observed stability as it imported 5.03 MnT during the same period a year ago. According to the World Steel Association, Turkish crude steel output slightly decreased in Q3 CY19 and stood at 8.29 MnT, down by 6% Q-o-Q as compared to 8.8 MnT in Q2'19.

United States remained the largest supplier to Turkey which supplied 1.06 MnT in Q3'19 scrap with a 21 % share of total scrap imported by Turkey, up 23% Q-o-Q, as against 0.86 MnT in Q2'19. Followed by Netherlands which supplied 0.58 MnT scrap in Q3 '19 with a 11% share down 11% Q-o-Q.

Coal: Turkish coal imports have decreased by 20% on the year to 9.41 MnT during the third-quarter of CY19 (Jul-Sep'19) compared with 11.82 MnT in Q3 CY18, following a hefty decline in non-coking coal intake. Coal volume had also fell 2% Q-o-Q from 9.56 MnT in Q2 CY19. Turkish non-coking coal imports have fallen 18% Y-o-Y to 8.66 MnT in Q3 CY19. Apparently, subdued demand for fuel had lowered Turkey's imports from its major suppliers-Colombia and Russia. Coal intake from Colombia was down 15% Y-o-Y to 4.15 MnT during Q3 CY19, also marked 2% lower on the quarter from 4.24 MnT in Q2 CY19. Coal receipt from Russia had decreased 6% Y-o-Y to 3.36 MnT in Q3 CY19.

Iron Ore: Turkey iron ore imports in third quarter CY19 recorded at 2.45 MnT, down 8% as against 2.67 MnT in Q2 CY19. On a yearly basis too, imports fell 15% as compared to 2.88 MnT in Q3 CY18. Brazil stood the largest exporter of iron ore to Turkey for the quarter at 1.31 MnT, down slightly Q-o-Q. Sweden stood second largest exporter at 0.34 MnT (up 13%). Exports from India picked up to 0.18 MnT, up 50% amid rise in spot iron ore prices during the quarter. Other major exporters included South Korea, Russia and Canada at 0.17 MnT, 0.17 MnT and 0.16 MnT respectively.

Semi Finished: The country's semi finished steel imports witnessed a growth by 22% Q-o-Q to 1.23 MnT in Q3'19 as compared to 1.01 MnT of imports reported in Q2'19. On a yearly basis, semi-finished imports marginally decreased by 3% Y-o-Y from 1.2 MnT as compared to the same period in the preceding year, Q3'18. Russia remains the largest supplier to Turkey as it exported 0.67 MnT of semi finished steel in Q3'19 witnessed stability on a quarterly basis as against 0.68 MnT semi finish steel exported in Q2'19. Another major exporter was Ukraine which exported 0.22 MnT in Q3'19 as compared to 0.15 MnT exported in Q2'19, increasing by 47% Q-o-Q.

Finish Flat: Falling by 4%, Turkey's finish flat import volumes stood at 1.81 MnT in Q3 CY'19 as compared to 1.89 MnT in the preceding quarter. Meanwhile, on a monthly premise, the same ascended by 19% to 0.63 MnT in Sep'19 over 0.53 MnT a month ago. However, the same surged by 34% Y-o-Y in Sep'19 in contrast with 0.47 MnT in the corresponding month of the previous year. Russia as the largest finish flat supplier to Turkey which supplied at 0.46 MnT in Q3'19 and remained stable as compared to Q2'19. Another major supplier was France supplied at 0.24 MnT finish flat steel in Q3'19 up by 41% Q-o-Q.

Finish Long: Finish long imports have observed a decrease by 39% Q-o-Q to Turkey. As it imported 0.14 MnT in Q3'19 as compared to 0.23 MnT finish long steels in Q2'19. On a yearly basis, finish long imports decreased by 18% Y-o-Y as against 0.17 MnT during the same period in the preceding year. Spain supplied the largest quantity of finish long steel at 0.04 MnT in Q3'19, witnessing an increase by 33% Q-o-Q as against 0.03 MnT exported in Q2'19. Followed by the other suppliers Russia & United Kingdom supplied a decent quantity of finish long steel in Q3'19.
