Thailand recorded a 20.43% m-o-m rise in its steel billets import volumes in Aug'21. The volumes stood at 0.30 million tonnes (mn t) in Aug'21 as against 0.25 mn t in Jul'21, according to customs data collated by SteelMint.
Oman, Japan retain top exporters' spot
Oman and Japan continued to be the largest exporters of steel billets to Thailand followed by India in Aug'21.
Oman supplied the highest volume of steel billets to Thailand at 0.17 mn t in Aug'21, registering a significant 112% increase on a monthly basis as compared to 0.08 mn t in Jul'21. Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries remained active in exports on subdued domestic demand.
Japan, India and Iran retained the second-largest exporter's position with 0.03 mn t each. However, billets exports from Japan to Thailand witnessed a sharp decline of 62%, m-o-m.
Jan-Aug'21 billets imports rise 19%
Thailand's billet imports in Jan-Aug'21 amounted to 2.41 mn t, a y-o-y increase of 19.41% as against 2.02 mn t in Jan-Aug'20.
Considering y-o-y, Oman was the largest exporter of steel billets to Thailand in this period with 1 mn t followed by Japan and India with 0.39 and 0.27 mn t, respectively.
