SteelMint: India's domestic steel scrap index dips INR 300/t on dull semis trade

SteelMint's domestic steel scrap (end-cutting) index dropped by INR 300/tonne (t) to INR 41,700/t DAP Mandi Gobindgarh on 14 Jan'22.

Trade activities remained limited on account of Lohri and Makar Sankranti festivals, leading to poor offtake of semi-finished as well as finished steel. Prices of semi-finished steel declined marginally, weighing on scrap bids of induction furnace units.

Meanwhile, the removal of anti-dumping duty on color coated/pre-painted materials remained a concern among trade participants which softened sentiments in today's trading session.

However, traders remained active in offering scrap owing to the declining trend of semi-finished steel. A few transactions were also heard to have been concluded. However, the conversion spread (from ingots to melting scrap) remained range-bound on a d-o-d basis.

Today, 10 sets of trades, indicative prices/bids/offers were recorded in the publishing window.

The Index also derives the HMS 80:20 scrap (Heavy, Med), and CR Sheet cutting prices traded in the region.
