Status Update of ongoing Graphite Electrode Projects in China

The sluggish demand and increased domestic supplies last year have already taken a toll on China's GE prices and if this was not enough, the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted the electrodes demand and its trade globally. Affected by the developments in last one year the release date of new capacity has already slowed down against the expectations.
According to ICC Xinxi data, the total capacity of China's graphite electrodes in 2019 stands to be at 1.90 MnT, an increase of 38% year-on-year basis and the total output during the year is estimated to be around 1.19 MnT, a y-o-y surge of 25.7%.
Affected by the weakening overseas demand in the second half of the year, especially after October, China's total export of graphite electrodes stood to be around 350,000 tonnes in 2019, an increase of 19% year-on-year basis.
