South Korea: POSCO, Hyundai Steel to undertake regular maintenance in May'24

South Korean steelmakers POSCO and Hyundai Steel are ramping up for a period of concentrated maintenance activities at their production facilities in May 2024.

POSCO focuses on rolling mills, blast furnace

POSCO has already begun since April, major repairs on its cold rolling mill at Pohang Steelworks. This will be followed by a similar overhaul on its 4th hot rolling mill at Gwangyang Steelworks in early May.

Additionally, repairs are ongoing at Pohang's 4th blast furnace and its 2nd hot rolling mill. Major maintenance is also underway at several cold rolling mills across both Pohang and Gwangyang facilities, with an expected completion by mid-May.

POSCO's efforts extend to the CGL mill at Pohang, with a month-long repair project initiated in late April and slated for closure by the end of May. Gwangyang's 4th hot rolling mill will also undergo a 15-day refurbishment in early May.

Hyundai Steel targets Dangjin, Suncheon mills

Hyundai Steel is also lining up major repairs at its Dangjin and Suncheon facilities. The steel major's plans involve a sequential inspection of hot-rolled, heavy-plated, and cold-rolled mills, beginning with the Dangjin Steel Mill's second plate mill in early May.

The Dangjin mill's second plate plant will see a six-day repair project, while the first hot rolling plant is scheduled for a five-day overhaul in mid-to-late May.

Hyundai will complete the first half's regular maintenance on the Dangjin cold rolling plant by April-end. The focus will then shift to the Suncheon cold rolling plant, which will undergo an eight-day repair programme starting late May.

The aim for both companies is to complete all scheduled maintenance activities by the end of May, ensuring smooth operations for the rest of the year. Both POSCO and Hyundai Steel have emphasized that these repairs are part of their routine maintenance plans and no unexpected issues have been identified. Both companies emphasized that these repairs are part of their pre-planned schedules and no unforeseen issues have arisen.
