South Korea: POSCO adopts measures to prevent further damage from typhoon Hinnamnor

Steel giant POSCO's Pohang works was recently hit by flood following the typhoon Hinnamnor, causing damages and power outages at the facility.

However, in order to prevent further damage, the steel major has prepared a disaster plan and created a natural disaster emergency response team to check the possible risks prior to the landing of typhoon. Furthermore, operations were suspended to avoid accidents and casualities due to fire and explosions at steel works.

"Stopping operations at all the factories to cut power helped to prevent electrical accidents as there were thousands of electrical equipments including motors, transformers and circuit breakers. This was also a threat to the life of the equipments," said an official.

In addition, POSCO adopted advance measures to prevent the damage of blast furnace, which could have occured while keeping them idle for long period. This was incorporated by increasing the amount of coal inside the blast furnace to maintain the temperature level and reducing the iron ore at the same time.

Preliminary measures were taken by the employees to cut power and stop operations at the facilities, otherwise it would have been difficult to restore the damages caused by flood including explosion in furnace and entry of water into the facilities.

Moreover, the restoration of drainage work at rolling line is in the final stage and power supply has been progressed to 70%.
