Hyundai Steel to supply steel to Korea's wind power project...
Hyundai Steel, the second-largest steelmaker in South Korea, has announced that it has signed a contract to supply structural steel pipes and fin pile steel pipes for a large-scale offshore wind power project to be built off the coast of Hallim, Jeju. The construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of this year and the commercial operations are expected to start by 2024.
The Jeju Hallim Offshore Wind Power is the largest 100 megawatt (MW) offshore wind power plant in Korea, constructed by Hyundai Engineering and Construction in the sea area of Suwon-ri, Hallim-eup, Jeju Island.
In this power generation complex, only domestic equipment and parts are used to compose the facilites such as turbines, substructures, and power systems.
The fin pile material supplied by Hyundai Steel is used to support the lower part of the structure of the power plant.
Steel pipe products applied to offshore wind power generation facilities are characterised by ultra-diameter steel pipes and module unit products to secure economic feasibility of power generation complexes and to facilitate the manufacturing process.
Hyundai Steel has been exploring the offshore wind power market recently. Its second pipe factory at Ulsan Works particularly produces special quality products to cater to this emerging market.
Recently, with the emergence of a social interest and necessity for carbon neutrality, the wind power generation is in the spotlight as an eco-friendly energy source.
The Korean government plans to achieve 12 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power by 2030.
