South Korea: Galvanized steel sheet production up 3% m-o-m in Apr'22

Hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) sheet production by South Korean mills rose 3% to 620,888 tonnes (t) in April 2022, compared with 602,232 t in March, 2022. However, the same fell by 4% against 648,064 t seen in the same period last year.

During January-April, 2022, HDG output dropped 2% to 2.53 million tonnes (mnt) against 2.58 mnt in the corresponding period last year (CPLY).

Sales down 2% m-o-m in Apr'22

South Korea's hot-dipped galvanized sheet sales stood at 637,301 t, down 2% against 653,057 t a month ago. Similarly, sales declined 3% compared with 656,599 t in April 2021.

Domestic sales registered a rise of 3% to 399,071 t in April 2022, compared with 388,328 t in March 2022, while the same declined by 4% against 416,715 t in April 2021.

Exports declined by 10% m-o-m to 238,230 t in April 2022, against 264,729 t in the previous month. The same edged down by 1% against 239,887 t seen in April 2021.

During January-April, 2022, domestic sales and exports stood at 1.52 mnt (down 5% y-o-y) and 1.03 mnt (down 2% y-o-y) against 1.59 mnt and 1.05 mnt each respectively in January-April, 2021.

Region-wise sales y-o-y

In April 2022, HDG sheet sales fell 36% to 10,904 t in China, 26.2% to 3,126 t in North America, 11.3% to 24,784 t in Europe and 9.8% to 22,368 t in Japan against the same period last year.

However, sales went up y-o-y by 68.3% to 17,228 t in Southwest Asia, 43.6% to 3,143 t in Indonesia, 29.8% to 7,844 t in Turkey, 20% to 15,528 t in Latin America and 1.6% to 3,362 t in Thailand compared with sales volumes in April 2021.
