South Africa's chromite exports rise over 10% m-o-m in May'23

South Africa recorded 1.69 million tonnes (mnt) of exports of chromite (chrome ore and ferro chrome) in May 2023 as against 1.52 mnt in April.

Ferro chrome exports up 11%

• Ferro chrome exports from South Africa increased by 11% m-o-m in May to 0.35 mnt in comparison with 0.32 mnt in April.
  
  
• China imported, the largest importer, bought around 0.17 mnt of ferro chrome.
  
  
• However, exports in January-May were recorded at 1.88 mnt, increasing by 32% y-o-y.
  
  

Chrome ore exports rise 11%

• Chrome ore exports from South Africa increased by 11% m-o-m in May to 1.33 mnt compared to 1.20 mnt in April.
  
  
• China (0.62 mnt) and Mozambique (0.61 mnt) were the key importers.
  
  
• However, cumulative exports in January-May were recorded at 6.63 mnt, increasing by 10% compared to 6.02 mnt in the corresponding period last year.
