South Africa Pig Iron Exports Soar 15% in CY18

South Africa pig iron exports surge by around 81,000 MT in the calendar year of 2018 (Jan-Dec) against the same period in 2017, according to the customs.
The nation has exported about 625,080 MT pig iron during Jan-Dec'18 against 544,283 MT in Jan-Dec'17, surge by 14.84% Y-o-Y.
While in the month of Dec'18, South Africa pig iron exports are reported at 59,908 MT against 75,219 MT in Nov'18, decline by 20.35% on monthly premises.
In the month of December 2018, the crude steel production of South Africa was around 422,900 MT and in CY18 (Jan-Dec) it was approximately 6,327,300 MT. Meanwhile, in CY17 the figure of crude steel production stood at 6,301,800 MT.
Country-wise South African Pig iron exports
-- USA, the largest importer of South African Pig iron has imported 169,885 MT Pig iron in 2018 (Jan-Dec) against 146,316 MT in 2017 (Jan-Dec). In Dec'18, it was noticed that US imports recorded at 12,600 MT pig iron which was 21% of total pig iron export done by South Africa.
-- Netherlands, the second largest Pig iron importer of South African Pig iron has imported 79,734 MT Pig iron in 2018 (Jan-Dec) against 72,514 MT in 2017 (Jan-Dec).
-- Italy, the third largest Pig iron exporter to South Africa has exported 53,785 MT in 2018 (Jan-Dec).
Market Updates
-- In Jan-Dec'18, India remains the largest importer of ferrous scrap from South Africa with 231,847 MT, surge by 60% Y-o-Y as against 144,671 MT in 2017. While, Pakistan & Bangladesh imported around 115,733 MT & 73,314 MT in the same period.
-- The global export offers of steel grade Pig Iron are assessed at USD 310-320/MT FoB Brazil & USD 340-350/MT FoB India.
-- Presently, export offers of iron ore lumps, Fe 64%, South Africa are at USD 95/MT CNF India.
-- South African iron ore exports for the duration Jan-Dec'18 witnessed at 63,506,647 MT , in line with last year same duration (Jan-Dec'17) at 66,469,524 MT.
-- South African RB2 (5500 NAR) coal offers are assessed at USD 63/MT on FoB basis & USD 77/MT CNF India.
