South Africa: Manganese ore exports fall by nearly 10% m-o-m in September

South Africa's manganese ore exports were down 9% m-o-m to 1.76 million tonnes (mnt) in September 2022 in comparison with 1.876 mnt in August. The major importing countries were China (1.436 mn t), followed by Norway (0.11 mn t), Singapore (0.063 mn t) and India (0.032 mn t). Meanwhile, in January-September 2022, exports were up 3 % y-o-y to 16.429 mn t compared to the corresponding period last year (CPLY).

  • Exports to China down 16%
    Manganese ore imports by China fell by 16% to 1.20 mnt in September. The pressure on ore prices has increased, while the volume of enquiries and transactions has dropped, resulting in decreased import volumes during the month.

  • Exports to India up 83%
    India imported 0.058 mn t of manganese ore in September - a surge of 83% m-o-m due to improved demand from manganese alloy manufacturers during the festive season.

  • Exports to Singapore up 4%
    Singapore's imports were up by 4% m-o-m to 0.065 from South Africa in September 2022 as against 0.063 mnt in August.

  • Exports to Norway up 55%
    South African manganese ore exports to Norway increased by 55% m-o-m to 0.045 mn t in September. In January-September, cumulative exports rose by 117% to 0.590 mn t.
