South Africa: Ferrous Scrap Exports Stable in Oct'18

As per recently released customs data, South African scrap exports observed stability in Oct'18. The country exported 37,215 MT ferrous scrap in Oct'18, marginally up 2% M-o-M as against 36,454 MT exports in Sept'18. On yearly premises, the country witnessed stability in its scrap exports in Oct'18 as against 37,488 MT ferrous scrap in Oct'17.

Port-wise - In Oct'18, the majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa have been done through major port Durban (26,305 MT) occupying 71% share followed by Pretoria (4,078 MT), Johannesburg (3,092 MT) and Port Elizabeth (2,756 MT).

India remained the largest importer of South African ferrous scrap - Indian scrap imports climbed marginally up by 5% M-o-M in Oct'18. India imported 22,796 MT ferrous scrap occupying highest 61% share. Pakistan observed considerable growth of 27% M-o-M on increased purchases. Pakistan imported 6,598 MT ferrous scrap while other prominent importers were Bangladesh (4,890 MT, down 3% M-o-M) and Indonesia (899 MT, down 64% M-o-M) in Oct'18.

Top three importers India, Pakistan and Bangladesh occupied 61%, 18% and 13% share individually comprising a total 92% share of ferrous scrap exports from South Africa in Oct'18.

South African scrap exports up 4% Y-o-Y during Jan-Oct'18 - South Africa exported 393,909 MT ferrous scrap during Jan-Oct'18, up 4% Y-o-Y as against 377,134 MT same period last year.

On a yearly basis, India observed sharply increased imports, up 55% Y-o-Y from South Africa on easier and faster shipment and Pakistan's imports fell down by 23% Y-o-Y in CY18.

According to the data released by World Steel Association, crude steel production in South Africa edged down to 0.543 MnT in Oct'18 as against 0.573 MnT in Sept'18. While it totaled at 5.37 MnT during Jan-Oct'18 as against 5.25 MnT during Jan-Oct'17.

South African iron ore exports increased 29% M-o-M to 5.37 MnT in Oct'18 as against 4.17 MnT in Sept'18. Improved weather and transport constraints could have resulted in increased iron ore exports and stability in scrap exports in Oct'18 as compared with the last month.
