Russian Imports of Iron Ore Stable; Coal Imports Up by 12% in Q1 CY'19

Russian iron ore imports in Q1 CY19 recorded at 2.06 MnT, down slightly as against 2.07 MnT in Q4 CY 18. On yearly basis, imports increased 18% as compared to 1.75 MnT in Q1 CY18. Kazakhstan recorded major portion of Russian imports for the quarter at 2.05 MnT as against 2.06 MnT in Q4 CY18. Sweden witnessed imports at 0.02 MnT up against 0.01 MnT in Q4 CY18.
Russian imports for Mar'19 recorded at 0.79, up 27% as compared to 0.62 MnT in Feb'19.
Russia crude steel production down 5% in Q1 CY19: Russia crude steel output recorded at 16.81 MnT, down 5% as against 17.76 MnT in Q1 CY 18. Total crude steel production for Mar'19 witnessed at 5.79 MnT, down 7% as compared to Mar'18 output at 6.22 MnT.
Russian ferro alloy imports down for the quarter
Russian Ferro Alloys imports stooped low in Q1 CY19 by 11% from 0.54MnT in Q4 CY18 to 0.48MnT in Q1 CY19. However, in Mar'19 the imports were higher by 36% as compared to the Feb'19.
Manganese Ore imports were significantly down in Q1 CY19 as compared to previous quarter, whereas, the imports of Chrome Ore and Silico Manganese were stable. Chrome Ore imports in Russia escalated in Mar'19 by 67% as compared to previous month. Kazakhstan, South Africa and Georgia remained the top three importers from Russia in Mar'19 with 47%, 32% and 10% share respectively in the total imports of Russian Ferro Alloys.
Russia coal imports up 12% in Q1 CY19
Russian coal imports picked up 12% during the first quarter of CY19 (Jan'19-Ma'19), Russian coal imports have totaled 5.08 MnT, up 12% Y-o-Y from 4.54 MnT in Q1 CY18.
Russian coal imports have witnessed appreciable growth in Mar'19, wherein volume of coal taken during the month had attained the 2 MnT mark for the first time since Dec'17. As per data provided by Russian customs, the country had imported 2.08 MnT coal in Mar'19, up 41% M-o-M from 1.48 MnT in Feb'19, which was also 16% higher on the year from 1.8 MnT in Mar'18.
Coal supplies from neighboring country-Kazakhstan rose to a 15-month high during the month recorded at 1.62 MnT. Imports taken from Ukraine increased 43% M-o-M to 0.43 MnT in Mar'19.
