Russia: Ferrous Scrap Exports Stable in Feb'18

Russia- one of the major scrap exporter has witnessed nearly steady scrap exports in Feb'18 as compared with scrap exports recorded in Jan'18. As per recent customs data, Russia exported 328,607 MT ferrous scrap in Feb'18 as against 334,775 MT ferrous scrap exports recorded in Jan'18.
On the other hand, Russian ferrous scrap exports registered significant surge by 83% Y-o-Y in Feb'18 as against 180,964 MT ferrous scrap in Feb'17. Notably, monthly scrap exports in Feb'17 was recorded lowest in CY17.
Marginal fall in scrap exports from Russia could be attributed to high scrap export offers in Jan-Feb'18 and lowered imports from major importers like Turkey (-3% M-o-M) and Belarus (-54% M-o-M) however, exports didn't fall steeply over strong demand for Russian A3 grade scrap from South Korean steel mills in Feb'18.
In line with 2% M-o-M fall in scrap exports, Russia also witnessed fall in billet exports by 3% and finish flat exports by 24% in Feb'18. According to World Steel Association, Russia's crude steel production remained at 5.15 MnT in Feb'18, down 10% as against 5.70 MnT in Jan'18.
During first two months, top scrap loading port in Russia was St. Petersburg occupying 26% share of total scrap exports. Followed by Leningrad region (12%), Pskov region (11%), Primorye Territory (10%) and Rostav Region (8%) respectively.
Turkey's scrap imports from Russia fell marginally in Feb'18 -
Turkey imported highest 160,643 MT ferrous scrap from Russia in Feb'18 occupying almost 49% share of total scrap exports. However, its import volumes fell marginally in Feb'18 as against 165,472 MT in Jan'18.
South Korea remained second largest importer and recorded 62,280 MT ferrous scrap imports in Feb'18. South Korea recorded 45% M-o-M increase as against 42,836 MT ferrous scrap imported in Jan'18. Followed by other prominent importers were Belarus (41,035 MT, -54% M-o-M), Spain (22,274 MT, -41 M-o-M), Albania (17,307 MT) and Poland (6,808 MT) from Russia in Feb'18.
Russian scrap exports surged 57% Y-o-Y during Jan-Feb'18 - Russia exported 0.66 MnT ferrous scrap during Jan-Feb'18. Turkey imported highest 0.33 MnT followed by Belarus (0.13 MnT), South Korea (0.11 MnT) and Spain (0.04 MnT) respectively. Russian scrap exports recorded 57% surge as against 0.42 MnT scrap exports during the same period of last year.
