Russia: Ferrous Scrap Exports Plunge 39% in Jan'18

Russia- one of the major scrap exporter has witnessed significant fall of 39% M-o-M in its ferrous scrap exports in Jan'18. As per recent customs data, Russia exported 0.33 MnT ferrous scrap in Jan'18 as against 0.54 MnT ferrous scrap exports recorded in Dec'17.
On the other hand, Russian ferrous scrap exports registered 38% Y-o-Y growth in Jan'18 as against 0.24 MnT ferrous scrap in Jan'17.
Fall in scrap imports could be attributed to high scrap export offers and lowered imports from major importers like Turkey (-52% M-o-M) and South Korea (-50% M-o-M) in Jan'18.
In line with tumbled scrap exports, Russia also witnessed marginal fall in crude steel production by 4% M-o-M, billets exports declined by 13% M-o-M and finish long steel exports fell by 29% M-o-M in Jan'18. According to World Steel Association, Russia's crude steel production remained at 5.70 MnT in Jan'18 as against 5.93 MnT in Dec'17.
In 2017, Russia remained world's fourth largest ferrous scrap exporter after EU-28, USA and Japan. Russian ferrous scrap exports kept sliding down consecutively third time in 2017, which stood at 5.68 MnT, 5.57 MnT, 5.33 and 4.98 MnT in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively.
Major scrap loading ports remained St. Petersburg, Leningrad region, Pskov region, Rostav Region and Primorye Territory in Russia.
Turkey's scrap imports from Russia fell to almost half in Jan'18 -
Turkey imported highest 0.17 MnT ferrous scrap from Russia occupying almost 50% share of total scrap exports. However, its import volumes fell 51% in Jan'18 as against 0.35 MnT in Dec'17.
Belarus (0.09 MnT, +125% M-o-M) remained second largest importer surpassing South Korea (0.04 MnT, -50% M-o-M) in Jan'18. Other major importers were Spain (0.02 MnT), Poland (0.01 MnT) and Azerbaijan (0.01 MnT) from Russia in Jan'18.
