Russia: Coal Exports Up 11% M-o-M in Feb'20

Russian coal exports have increased 11% on the month to 14.31 MnT in Feb'20 compared with 12.87 MnT in Jan'20. However, the volume had registered a decline of 24% Y-o-Y from 18.75 MnT in Feb'19.

Growth on the monthly basis was supported by an uptick in Anthracite shipments, while supplies of coking coal and coke commodities remain subdued during Feb'20.

Grade-wise break of exports indicate that Anthracite shipments had surged 74% M-o-M to 1.72 MnT in Feb'20. On the other hand, supplies of coking coal, met and pet coke had come down during the month.

A slight improvement was noted in exports of non-coking coal which increased to 11.06 MnT in Feb'20 from 10.06 MnT in Jan'20, but the volume had fallen 16% on the year from 13.11 MnT in Feb'19.

Major Coal Importers:

China remained the largest receiver in Feb'20, with intake of 1.88 MnT coal. Imports increased 2% M-o-M from 1.85 MnT in Jan'20, which was also noted 21% higher on the year from 1.55 MnT in Feb'19.

South Korea emerged as the second-largest buyer in Feb'20. Coal intake increased 18% M-o-M to 1.44 MnT, but had fell 41% Y-o-Y from 2.44 MnT in Feb'19.

Coal receipt by Turkey witnessed a modest drop on the month to 1.37 MnT in Feb'20 as against 1.4 MnT in Jan'20, while a stronger growth was posted against the level seen in the year ago period.

During Feb'20, a hefty decline in intake was registered Y-o-Y from the major European coal buyers including Netherlands, Germany and Poland.
