Nippon Steel reduces CO2 emissions by 27% in FY22

Nippon Steel Corporation (NSC) recently announced that its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in fiscal year (FY) 2022 were 78 million tonnes (mnt), a decrease of about 27% from the base year of FY13. This brings the company closer to achieving its target of reducing CO2 emissions by 30% from FY13 levels by FY30.

The decline in emissions was largely due to a decline in production activity, but the company also implemented a number of initiatives to reduce emissions, such as improving operations, renewing blast furnaces, and introducing high-efficiency power generation equipment.

In FY22, NSC's CO2 emissions on a standalone basis were 75 mnt. Of this, 63.4 mnt were direct emissions (Scope 1) and 11.91 mnt were indirect emissions (Scope 2) from electricity purchases. The emission intensity per tonne of crude steel combined with Scopes 1 and 2 is 1.92 tonnes (t). This was slightly worse than the 1.88 t in FY21, due to the deterioration in energy efficiency associated with the decline in production activities.

NSC also disclosed its emissions in the supply chain (Scope 3). Emissions related to material purchases and transportation were approximately 12.9 mnt.

NSC is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions and achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2050. The company will continue to implement initiatives to improve energy efficiency and adopt new technologies to decarbonise its operations.
