Mongolia: Coal output rises 11% m-o-m in Oct'24

  • Export volume surges 33% y-o-y in Oct'24

  • Coal output rises 25.8% y-o-y in Jan-Oct

Mysteel Global: Total coal production in Mongolia during October 2024 rose 10.9% m-o-m to 8.94 million tonnes (mnt), according to new data released by the National Statistical Office of Mongolia (NSO). The output was also higher by the same 10.9% compared with October last year.

October's performance means that for the first ten months of this year, Mongolia produced 81.1 million tonnes of coal, up by a notable 25.8% from the same period last year, the NSO data show. No breakdown by type of coal was given, but the majority would have been coking coal, Mysteel Global notes.

The NSO data also show that Mongolia's coal export volume in October reached 7.274 mnt, up 33% from the year-ago month. This took January-October exports to 68.493 mnt, higher by 25.9% from the year-earlier period.

Almost all Mongolian coal exports are to China and enter the country via three main land border ports, namely Ganqimaodu, Ceke and Mandula, all in North China's Inner Mongolia.
