JSPL Commissions 6 MnT Angul Steel Unit

Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) today announced the commissioning of its 6 MnT steel plant at Angul (Odisha) with the largest blast furnace of 4554 cubic metres. The steel mill is also the largest in Odisha.

Naveen Jindal, chairman of JSPL said, "The plant was set up at an investment of about Rs 33,000 crore and it would enable the company to overcome its loss in the aftermath of the coal block cancellation. JSPL would play a significant role in development of the state.''

The Angul project would make JSPL the fourth biggest steel producing company in the country after JSW Steel, SAIL and Tata Steel. After the commissioning of the Angul project, JSPL now has a nameplate capacity of 10.75 MnT in steel making.

The company had installed 2/ MTPA steel making capacity at its Angul steel complex in 2015 with Coal Gasification - DRI route, which is being used for the first time in the world. Later it further added 4/MTPA steel making capacity.

The Angul steel complex has also 6 MTPA sinter plant, 2 MTPA coke oven, 3 MTPA steel melting shop, 1.2 MTPA plate mill, 1.4 MTPA bar mill and a 810 MW captive power plant.

Odisha's chief minister Naveen Patnaik who inaugurated the steel project said, "The state government is committed to provide all support and facilitation to the steel industry and as a result we have added more than 16 MnT steelmaking capacity in the state since 2005. As India looks to reach a steel manufacturing capacity of 300 MnT by 2030, I am proud to note that more than 20 % of the country's steel shall continue to be produced in our state."

JSPL's Angul steel project has the potential to provide direct employment to over 30,000 people besides generating more than 100,000 jobs. The chief minister encouraged the JSPL team to encourage local entrepreneurship by assisting at least 50 small and downstream units to the plant within a year.

The Naveen Jindal promoted firm had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Odisha government in 2005 to build this mega steel plant.
