Japan's Tokyo Steel has booked H2 scrap from South Korea for the second time in the year,according to sources. Domestic scrap prices in Japan are on rise owing to improved demand for steel, which is a result of upcoming Olympics.
Tokyo steel has already raised their purchase price for scrap by USD 40-50/MT in last 45 days. Now H2 scrap fetches JPY 35,500/MT (USD 319) at largest work in central Japan-Tahara. While the same grade fetches JPY 34,500/MT (USD 310) at Utsunomiya works in north Japan, as well as at Okayama and Kyushu works in west Japan respectively. For its Takamatsu Steel Center company keeps bid at JPY 34,000/MT (USD 305).
Korean scrap exports have increased by about 30% during 2017 (Jan-Oct) against same period in preceding year. Korea exported about 260,000 MT during Jan-Oct 2016, which increased to 340,000 MT during Jan-Oct 2017.
Domestic sources report that,Korea's GMR Material has signed a supply contract of 9,000 MT H2 grade scrap from East Rail (Korea), which will be supplied to Tokyo steel's Kyushu plant. GMR material had supplied about 3,000 MT to Tokyo steel in the month of June 2017.
Although the specific price has not been clarified but it is assumed that these prices are lower than the current prices in Japan.
