Japan's aluminium imports, exports down by 12% m-o-m in Nov'22

Japan's aluminium imports stood at 210,993 tonnes (t) in November 2022, customs data showed. The volumes fell by 12% m-o-m compared to 239,251 t in October. On a y-o-y basis, imports were down by 21% from 267,450 t in November 2021.

Sub-commodity-wise imports-

• Ores/concentrates: Imports stood at 9,825 t in November, down 51% m-o-m compared to 19,968 t in October.
  
  
• Semi finished products: Imports fell by 10% m-o-m to 171,730 t in November from 191,591 t in the previous month.
  
  
• Scrap: Imports saw a rise of 16% m-o-m to 7,416 t compared to 6,376 t in October.
  
  
• Finished products: Import volumes inched up by 3% m-o-m to 22,022 t in November compared to 21,316 t in October.
  
  

Country-wise imports-

• Imports from Russia stable: Japan's aluminium imports from Russia were recorded at 32,472 t in November, largely stable m-o-m from 32,619 t in October. However, on a y-o-y basis, the volumes decreased sharply by 40% from 54,451 t in November 2021.
  
  
• Imports from UAE rises: Imports from UAE rose to 32,009 t in November, up 42% m-o-m as against 22,548 t in the previous month. However, shipments decreased by 20% y-o-y compared to 39,989 t in the same month last year.
  
  
• Imports from China decrease: Japan imported 26,563 t of aluminium from China in November, down 15% from 31,331 t in October. The volumes rose by 11% y-o-y from 23,846 t in the corresponding period last year.
  
  

Japan's aluminium exports down 12% m-o-m

The country's aluminium exports stood at 63,426 t in November, a drop of 12% m-o-m as against 72,135 t in October. On a y-o-y basis, the volume decreased marginally by 2% to 64,487 t in November 2021.

Sub-commodity-wise exports-

• Ores/concentrates: Exports stood at 5,288 t in November, down 14% m-o-m compared to 5,531 t in October.
  
  
• Semi finished products: Exports fell by 21% m-o-m to 1,319 t in November from 1,670 t in the previous month.
  
  
• Scrap: Imports saw a decline of 12% m-o-m to 36,116 t compared to 41,199 t in October.
  
  
• Finished products: Export volumes went down by 13% m-o-m to 20,703 t in November compared to 23,735 t in October.
  
  

Country-wise exports-

• • Exports to China down: Japan exported 20,328 t to China in the month under review, inching down 3% m-o-m compared to 21,007 t in October. Similarly, shipments, on a y-o-y basis, decreased by 3% compared to 20,328 t in the corresponding period last year.
    
    
  • Exports to Malaysia fall: Exports to Malaysia stood at 11,354 t in November, down 5% as against 11,893 t in October. On a y-o-y basis, the volumes rose sharply by 23% from 9,217 t in November 2021.
    
    
  • Exports to Thailand decrease: Exports to Thailand fell by 13% m-o-m to 9,704 t in the month under review. On a y-o-y basis, the volume rose by 13% as against 8,608 t in November 2021.
