Japan Steel Import Statistics: Jan'20

Japan's raw material & finished flat steel imports witnessed decline in Jan'20, whereas finished long steel remained stable M-o-M, as per the custom data maintained with SteelMint.

Coal imports by Japan have seen a marginal drop in Jan'20 which recorded successive rise in the past 3 months.

Japan imported 17.2 MnT coal in Jan'20 as against 17.98 MnT in Dec'19. However, the import volume was marked 2.4% higher on an yearly basis as against16.79 MnT in Jan'19. The lower coal receipt is due to the decline in non-coking coal shipments which came down 7% M-o-M to 11.07 MnT in Jan'20. Incidentally, recede in non-coking imports was the only decline noted among the major coal commodities.

Iron Ore imports were registered at 9.04 MnT in Jan'20, down by 7.5% as compared to 9.78 MnT in Dec'19, and on an yearly comparison, the imports dropped by 1.52% in Jan'20 as against 9.18 MnT in Jan'19.

Finish Long Steel imports remained stable at 0.05 MnT as against the same quantity in Dec'19. Whereas on a yearly basis, imports plunged by 28.6% in Jan'20 as against 0.07 MnT in Jan'19.

Finish Long Stainless Steel imports were registered at 1,671 MT in Jan'20, down by 18.5% against 2,049 MT in Dec'19 and on an yearly basis, the import volume plunged by 36.5% in Jan'20 as compared to 2,630 MT in Jan'19.

Finish Flat import was registered at 0.36 MnT which is down by 12% as against 0.41 MnT in Dec'19. In Y-o-Y comparison, imports plunged by 14.3% against 0.42 MnT in Jan'19.

Finish Flat Stainless Steel imports by Japan were registered at 17,680 MT in Jan'20, plunged by 10.7% as against 19,802 MT in Dec'19 and on an yearly basis, imports fell by 1.2% as compared to 17,891 MT in Jan'19.

Ferro Alloy imports in Jan'20 were registered at 0.27 MnT, surged by 92.8% as against 0.14 MnT in Dec'19, whereas on Y-o-Y basis, the same dropped by 6.9% as against 0.29 MnT in Jan'19.
