Japan: Aluminium imports down by 3%, exports remain stable y-o-y in CY'22

The total import volume of Japan's aluminium in Calendar Year 2022 (CY'22) stood at 2,945,500 t, down by 3% as against CPLY. Japan's aluminium imports stood at 217,959 tonnes (t) in December 2022, Customs data showed. The volume went up by 3% m-o-m compared to 210,993 t in November.

Sub-commodity-wise imports

• Ores/concentrates: Imports stood at 7,166 t in December, down by 27% m-o-m compared to 9,825 t in November.
  
  
• Semi-finished products: Imports up by 8% m-o-m to 185,426 t in December from 171,730 t in the previous month.
  
  
• Scrap: Imports saw a rise of 4% m-o-m to 7,678 t compared to 7,416 t in November.
  
  
• Finished products: Import volumes inched down by 20% m-o-m to 17,690 t in December compared to 22,022 t in November.
  
  

Country-wise imports

• Imports from the UAE: Imports from the UAE fell to 31,674 t in December, largely stable with a slight decline by 1% m-o-m as against 32,009 t in the previous month. However, shipments decreased by 12% y-o-y compared to 36,000 t in the same month last year.
  
  
• Imports from Australia: Japan's aluminium imports from Australia were recorded at 28,613 t in December, rose by 40% drastically m-o-m from 20,495 t in November. Similarly, the volumes increased by 5% y-o-y from 27,196 t in December 2021.
  Imports from China decrease: Japan imported 24,831 t of aluminium from China in December, down by 7% from 26,563 t in November. The volumes fell by 16% y-o-y from 29,488 t in the corresponding period last year (CPLY).
  
  

Japan's aluminium exports

The aluminium export volume of Japan continued to be stable in CY'22 at 817,323 t. The country's aluminium exports stood at 68,520 t in December, a rise of 8% m-o-m as against 63,426 t in November.

Sub-commodity-wise exports

• Ores/concentrates: Exports stood at 4,843 t in December, down by 8% m-o-m compared to 5,288 t in November.
  
  
• Semi-finished products: Exports rose by 9% m-o-m to 1,443 t in December from 1,319 t in the previous month.
  
  
• Scrap: Imports were largely stable m-o-m to 36,414 t in December as against November.
  
  
• Finished products: Export volumes went up by 25% m-o-m to 25,820 t in December compared to 20,703 t in November.
  
  

Country-wise exports

• Exports to China: Japan exported 22,728 t to China in the month under review, up by 12% m-o-m compared to 20,328 t in November. Similarly, shipments increased by 2% y-o-y compared to 22,284 t in the corresponding period last year (CPLY).
  
  
• Exports to Malaysia: Exports to Malaysia stood at 13,091 t in December, up by 15% as against 11,354 t in November. The volumes rose sharply by 56% y-o-y from 8,405 t in December 2021.
  
  
• Exports to Thailand: Exports to Thailand fell by 10% m-o-m to 8,750 t in the month under review. The volume fell by 13% y-o-y as against 10,010 t in December, 2021.
