Iran's steel capacity is likely to reach 54 mn t by 2022- OECD

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published a report, titled "the latest developments in world steelmaking capacity" which says by 2022, around 58.2 mn t new steel capacities are likely to be operational, across the globe. The majority of the capacity additions are planned in Asia and the Middle East.

The report predicts by 2022, the steelmaking capacity additions of Asia and the Middle East would reach 27 mn t and 19 mn t respectively. The majority of the capacities in the Middle East are planned in Iran. According to the report, Iran's steelmaking capacity is likely to reach 54.4 mn t by 2022, to register a growth of 51% during the period 2020-2022. While the growth of world steelmaking capacity during this period will be only between 2-3%. The current steelmaking capacity of Iran is approximately 36 mn t in CY'19. The report also mentioned that there are about 20.1 mn t steel capacities which are in the planning stage, and construction of which has not yet begun.
