Iran: Mobarakeh Steel Company plans capacity expansion

Mobarakeh Steel Company (MSC), the largest steel company in Iran, is aiming to increase production capacity by starting eight new projects worth Euro 909 mn by Mar'24, said IMIDRO chairman Khodadad Gharibpour.
The capacity expansion project followed a recent plan to ban imports of HRC in Iran, as the government is gearing up to reduce dependency on imports to meet the domestic HRC demand of automotive, oil and gas piping and home appliances industries.
Major expansion projects planned by MSC:
- Expansion of hot rolling mill no. 2, expected to start in 2.5 years, will raise the hot-rolling capacity of MSC to 7.2 mtpa.
- Iron ore concentrate plant in Sangan Iron ore complex with production capacity of 5mtpa. First phase of 2.5 mtpa is in trial operations and the second phase will start soon.
- Sefid Dasht casting plant, expected to start this year, will be capable of producing 800,000 mtpa slab.
- Ardakan GE plant with production capacity of 30,000 mtpa is expected to start construction this year.
- HOSCO billet casting plant with capacity of 400,000 mtpa and plate unit of 1.2 mtpa capacity will be operational in a couple of years.
