Indonesia's coal exports increase by 20% y-o-y in Jan-Jul 2024

Indonesian coal exports rose by 20% in Jan-Jul 2024, reaching 245.31 million tonnes (mnt) compared to 204.31 mnt in Jan-Jul 2023, as per vessel line up data maintained with BigMint.

In Jan-Jul 2024, Indonesian non-coking coal exports stood at 243.14 mnt and coking coal at 2.17 mnt. Indonesian coal exports are largely stable m-o-m to 36.80 mnt in July 2024 as against 36.56 mnt in June 2024.

Non coking coal exports to Asian countries:

China: China remained the top destination, with non coking coal shipments totalling 72.50 mnt in Jan-Jul 2024 compared to 60.41 mnt in Jan-Jul 2023, up by 20% y-o-y, and increased by 3% m-o-m in July 2024 from June 2024.

India: Exports to India were 65.05 mnt in Jan-Jul 2024 against 51.32 mnt in Jan-Jul 2023, a significant 26.75% y-o-y increase and a 16.51% m-o-m increase in July 2024 against June 2024.

The Philippines: Exports to the Philippines rose by 15.16% y-o-y to 19.96 mnt in Jan-Jul 2024 compared to 17.33 mnt in Jan-Jul 2023, but drop by 5% m-o-m in July 2024 against June 2024.

Vietnam: Shipments to Vietnam increased by 62% y-o-y to 13.89 mnt in Jan-Jul 2024 against 8.58 mnt in Jan-Jul 2023, but dropped by -34% m-o-m in July 2024 against June 2024.

Port-wise exports

Exports from Samarinda decreased by -25.2% y-o-y to 40.64 mnt in Jan-Jul 2024 as against 54.34 mnt Jan-Jul 2023, but increased by 3% m-o-m to 8 mnt in July 2024. Exports from Taboneo increased by 37.71% y-o-y to 39.36 mnt in Jan-Jul 2024 as against 28.58 mnt in Jan-Jul 2023, but decreased by 10% m-o-m at 5.48 mnt in July 2024.

Outlook: Inactive purchases from Chinese buyers have driven Indonesian thermal coal miners to ramp up thermal coal sales to domestic users as of 29 July, a measure aimed at rebalancing the supply-demand relation in the export market, market sources said.
