India's RINL Commissions Coke Oven Battery-5

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) commissioned its new coke oven battery 5 project complex on July 5, 2019 with the light-up of the chimney of the battery, built at an investment of INR 2500 crore.

RINL constructed the coke oven battery-5 (COB-5) to cater to the coke requirement of the plant which was expanded to 6.3 MTPA of liquid steel capacity.RINL also added another 1 million tonnes (MnT) by modernizing and revamping the existing production units, thus taking the overall capacity to 7.3 MTPA.

The COB-5 was constructed along with the existing batteries at an estimated cost of INR 2,500 crore with a production capacity of 8.40 lakh tonnes of blast furnace grade coke per year, one of the key raw materials for hot metal production. The COB will be similar to the existing ones,7 metre tall and with 67 ovens each and a by-product recovery-top charge type battery. The coke oven battery-5 will generate 14 MW of power through a waste heat recovery project as well.

Battery heating will be taken up after achieving the required draft in the chimney, which will take about 10 to 15 days. The chimney is a 120-metre tall RCC structure (2450 cum) with inside refractory work (1300 tonnes). The chimney is designed to exhaust the waste flue gas generated during operation of the battery.

RINL presently has four coke oven batteries producing 2.48 MnT of BF grade coke. The coke requirement for the blast furnaces (net and dry) for 6.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity has been estimated at 2.88 MTPA with 15% ash content.

The battery with chimney is being constructed by BEC consortium under the consultancy of MECON Limited.

While addressing the gathering, RINL Chairman-cum-Managing Director, P.K. Rath, stressed on the importance of the commissioning of the battery as per schedule and exhorted all those involved in the project to make all-out efforts to achieve the same with strict adherence to safety standards.

P.Raychaudhury, Director (Commercial), K.C. Das, Director (Personnel), V.V. Venugopal Rao, Director (Finance), R. Nagarajan, ED (Projects) I/c and senior official were present on the occasion.
