India's pet coke production dips 1.6%, consumption rises 7.5% in Sep'24

India's petroleum coke (pet coke) production for September 2024 stood at 1.13 million tonnes (mnt), reflecting a 1.6% decline year-on-year from 1.15 mnt in September 2023. Production dropped by 9.0% from 1.24 mnt in August 2024. Cumulatively, for April-September 2024, production reached 7.36 mnt, showing a 2.2% drop compared to 7.53 mnt during the same period last year.
Pet coke production in September accounted for 4.98% of the total domestic petroleum product output of 22.73 mnt. The cumulative share from April-September 2024 was 5.26% of the 139.93 mnt total output.
Consumption of pet coke in September 2024 was 1.61 mnt, showing a 7.5% y-o-y increase from 1.50 mnt in September 2023. However, it saw a slight month-on-month decline of 4.0% from 1.76 mnt in August 2024. On a cumulative basis from April to September 2024, total pet coke consumption was 10.72 mnt, marking a 10.4% growth over the 9.71 mnt consumed during the same period last year.
Outlook
The cement industry, the primary consumer of pet coke, is expected to drive higher demand, supported by increased infrastructure activity. The consumption may pick up in coming months on resumption post festival holidays and expected rise in industrial and infrastructure activities.
