FY20: Indian Ports handle Highest ever Coal Shipments in a Year

According to the data maintained with CoalMint research, coal traffic volume handled at India's 35 key ports have surged by 19% y-o-y from 266 MnT in FY19 to 316 MnT in FY20, highest ever coal shipments handled by the domestic ports.
Non-Coking coal shipments have increased by 21% y-o-y to 240 MnT in FY20 against 197 MnT in FY19, while Coking coal shipments increased by 10% y-o-y to 59 MnT in FY20.
Coastal movement surges at Paradip port in FY20
Paradip port became India's largest coal handling port in FY20, leaving behind Mundra port which was at first position in FY19.
The Paradip port handled about 40 MnT of coal shipment in FY20, up by 52% y-o-y basis. The port had increased coastal movement from 6.4 MnT in FY19 to 21.1 MnT in FY20 with highest movement with Krishnaptnam port followed by Ennore and Tuticorin ports.
While in case of import shipments at Paradip port, there was a plunge of 6% from 19.8 MnT in FY19 to 18.7 MnT in FY20.
About other ports
Mundra port stood second in the list of ports handling highest coal traffic as the same handled coal shipment of 32.5 MnT in FY20, up by 0.63% y-o-y basis.
Krishnapatnam port observed a y-o-y surge of 15% from 26.3 MnT in FY19 to 30.2 MnT in FY20. In case of Gangavaram port, the coal traffic handled increased by 13% y-o-y basis at 22.2 MnT in FY20.
The Dahej port recorded a significant plunge in coal traffic handled from 7.2 MnT in FY19 to 5.1 MnT in FY20 followed by Mangalore port from 6.39 MnT in FY19 to 5.14 MnT in FY20.
Mundra port handles highest non-coking coal shipment
The data reveals that, Mundra port handled highest non-coking coal shipment in FY20 as the same stood at 33.2 MnT during the year against 32.7 MnT in FY19. Krishnapatnam and Gangavaram followed the suit at 26.8 MnT and 15.4 MnT respectively in FY20.
Coking coal shipment surges at Dhamra and Vizag port
Paradip remained at the top to handle coking coal shipment with quantity of 11.8 MnT being handled in FY20. It has registered a drop of 1.5% y-o-y basis.
However, the coking coal shipment handled by Dhamra port rose from 8.9 MnT in FY19 to 10.1 MnT in FY20 whereas in case of Vizag the same surged from 5.4 MnT to 7.1 MnT.
