Indian Iron Ore Imports Data 2019 (Till Aug) - Importer Wise

India has noticed a gradual decline in imports of iron ore from the last few months amid high global prices followed by Vale damn burst on 25^th Jan'19. In the month of August, no import vessel was reported at Indian ports.

Total imports from Jan-Aug 2019 stands at around 1.9 MnT, Australia being the largest exporter with a total share of over 40% followed by South Africa and Brazil.

JSW Steel turn out to be the largest importer of iron ore at 1.12 MnT (Jan-Aug'19) with a share of 58% followed by Jindal Saw (0.16 MnT) and KIOCL (0.15 MnT).

Falling steel prices in India's domestic market kept demand for high priced imported iron ore low and cost-effective domestic iron ore/pellets remained a preference. Imported South African lumps inquiries in India continued to remain slow as the domestic pellet was more preferable. West India based steel mills preferred domestic pellets.
