Indian government imposes anti-dumping duty on stainless steel pipes, tubes

The Indian government has announced to impose an anti dumping duty to protect the domestic industry of stainless steel seamless pipes and tubes imported from China-origin on 21 December, 2022.

The notification is valid for five years from the date of publication in the Official Gazette and is payable in Indian currency, as per the recent notification.

Stainless steel seamless tubes and pipes with diameter up to and including 6 NPS, or comparable thereof in other unit of measurement, whether manufactured using hot extrusion process or hot piercing process and whether sold as hot finished or cold finished pipes and tubes, including subject goods imported in the form of defectives, non-prime or secondary grades is included under the circular.

The major manufacturers of seamless stainless steel pipes and tubes will benefit from a competitive advantage and will be able to protect their product prices from lower-cost Chinese imports. As a result, domestic producers may increase production levels in the near-term to meet the needs of domestic buyers.

The Indian seamless pipe and tube industry has a total capacity of approximately 1.7 million tonnes. Maharastra Seamless Ltd, which recently acquired Unitem Seamless, controls approximately 55% of the market. Other major market players in the stainless steel seamless tube and pipe industry include Ratnamani Metal and Tubes Ltd, Jindal Saw Ltd, Apex Tubes, and BRG Iron & Steel Company.
