Indian Billet Exports Rise in Q4 on Chinese Buying

India's billet and bloom exports were recorded at 2.69 MnT during CY19, up 12% Y-o-Y. Meanwhile, on M-o-M basis, the country's exports booked a growth of 43% during Dec'19 to reach 430,000 MT from 300,000 MT in Nov'19. Tight availability of domestic billets in China amid production curbs resulted in higher domestic prices; this resulted in Chinese mills booking billets from India, Iran etc which were comparatively cost-effective.
The country's billet and bloom exports have registered a compound annual growth rate of 15% during the period CY16-19. In CY16, India's billet and bloom exports were recorded at 1.75 MnT.
Q4 CY19 The game changing quarter- Amid rising demand from SE Asia supported by environmental production curbs and ban on scrap imports in China have surged the Indian billet/bloom exports to two folds during Q4CY19; compare to other three quarters of CY19.

RINL remained the largest bulk billet exporter in Dec'19- RINL, SAIL, JSPL and JSW were the major exporters with 108,830 MT, 91,700 MT, 68,300 MT and 49,000 MT of bulk billet/bloom exports respectively, during Dec'19.

Indian billet exports to China surge in Q4 CY19 - According to data maintained with SteelMint, Indian billet/bloom exports to China was recorded at 0.31 MnT in Q4 CY19 which was nil in first two quarters.Other major destinations were- Nepal and Sri Lanka at 960,000 MT, 340,000 MT respectively, during CY19. While Italy, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia also had the sizeable Indian billet/bloom imports of quantity 290,000 MT, 160,000 MT, 120,000 MT, 110,000 MT respectively.
Since CY16, the billet/bloom exports to Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Nepal have registered a growth fold of; 8, 5, 2 and 2 folds respectively in CY19. Below table shows the country wise billet/bloom exports from India.
