India: Vedanta Aluminium increases its alumina refining capacity to 3.5 million tonnes per annum

Vedanta Aluminium, the largest aluminium producer in India, announced a significant milestone in its expansion efforts to become one of the top three global players with a production capacity of 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of aluminium. Taking a crucial step towards achieving complete vertical integration, the company revealed the successful commissioning of a new 1.5 million tonnes (mnt) expansion at its state-of-the-art alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha.

This development increases the refinery's production capacity from 2 MTPA to 3.5 MTPA. This additional capacity is part of the company's ongoing expansion plan, which aims to elevate the Lanjigarh refinery's overall nameplate capacity from the current 2 mnt to 5 mnt thereby supporting its growing aluminium production.

Vedanta Aluminium provides a wide array of top-tier aluminium products globally, featuring India's pioneering low-carbon 'green' aluminium line named Restora. These products serve crucial roles in various sectors like automotive, aerospace, defence, infrastructure, power projects, electricals, and packaging. Additionally, the company stands as a major producer of premier smelter grade alumina (SGA) in India, a vital raw material for its aluminium plants located in Jharsuguda (Odisha) and BALCO (Chhattisgarh).

John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, expressed his satisfaction with the successful commissioning of the expanded capacity, emphasising its role in enhancing raw material security and cutting costs for the Jharsuguda and BALCO aluminium smelters. This development marks a substantial stride towards achieving complete vertical integration and places the company in a robust position for sustainable growth in the global aluminium market.

Vedanta Aluminium, a division of Vedanta Limited, stands as the foremost producer of aluminium in India, contributing to over half of the nation's aluminium output, totalling 2.37 mnt in FY24. Renowned for its value-added aluminium products serving critical roles across various industries, Vedanta Aluminium holds the top position in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023 world rankings for the aluminium industry, underscoring its commitment to sustainable development. With its state-of-the-art aluminium smelters, alumina refinery, and power plants across India, the company is dedicated to advancing the applications of aluminium as the 'metal of the future' for a more environmentally friendly tomorrow.
