India: Tata Steel commissions its steel recycling plant in Haryana

Tata Steel India (TSL), one of the biggest steel producers in India, has commissioned a new steel recycling plant of 0.5 million tonnes (mn t) per year capacity in Rohtak, Haryana, as per latest reports. This has been built on build-own-operate (BOO) basis in partnership with Aarti Green Tech Ltd.

The plant is equipped with modern and mechanical equipment such as shredder, baler, material handler etc. which makes it first of its kind in the country.

For recycling, the company will source from various market segments such as end-of-life vehicles, obsolete households scrap, construction, demolition, industrial material etc, through its application called FerroHaat. This collected scrap will then be processed through mechanised equipment to produce high-quality processed scrap, which will be supplied for downstream steelmaking. Steel produced through the recycled-route entails lower carbon emissions, resource consumption and energy utilisation.

Along with this, Tata Steel has also launched two new brands called 'Tata FerroBaled' and 'Tata FerroShred' for the high quality baled and shredded ferrous scrap produced in its new facility. High level of cleanliness, low contamination, high bulk density, lower tramp elements and no radioactivity are some the features of these products. With this, the company promises to make quality processed ferrous scrap available to the Indian steel market, thereby, reducing the country's dependency on imports.

"Steel can be recycled again and again without losing its properties… Recycling scrap ensures the closure of the circular economy loop. The brand names will give a distinct identity to the processed scrap and ensure a standardised quality product for the customer and simultaneously raise the bar of the scrap Industry," Tata Steel's Chief of Steel Recycling Business, Yogesh Bedi, said.

These branded products will be accompanied by test certificates along with value propositions like higher yield, better productivity, lower conversion costs, lower transportation and handling costs and, overall, better quality.
