NMDC resumed operations at Bacheli and Kirandul mines today as per sources report to SteelMint. Also as per reports received so far, strikes have been dissolved for now.
Earlier, on 11th June'19, NMDC had stopped production at all its mines in Bailadila following protest from locals. The miner had suspended mining at Bailadila Complex consisting of Bacheli and Kirandul mining blocks in Chhattisgarh due to agitation from locals against mining in Deposit 13 which is supposed to house their deity.
The mining was halted at Kirandul on 7th June and at Bacheli on 11th June. NMDC had earlier announced development of its 10 MnT Iron Ore Deposit-13 in Chhattisgarh through a joint venture of NMDC-CMDC (or NCL), However, the JV Company NCL is only restricted to selling of the iron ore from the deposit while the contract of excavation and mine development has been awarded to Adani Enterprises through transparent reverse bidding process. As per the local's report, the mine area is supposed to be house their deity.
Earlier, on 7th June around 10,000 tribals from some 200 villages of Dantewada, Sukma and Bijapur districts, launched an indefinite protest in front of NMDC's Kirandul facility, demanding the PSE should abandon plan to mine the hill. This is owing to their religious belief that the excavations of the ore in Nandaraj hills will destroy their religious site.
The Honorable Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Mr Bhupesh Bhagel ordered stay at all mining activities at Bailadila's iron ore Deposit 13 on 11th June'19. Also, the Honorable CM ordered inquiry and investigation regarding the complaint received and instructed to immediately halt the deforestation of affected area.
NMDC produced 32.36 MnT iron ore in FY19, down 9% Y-o-Y. Out of this 23.39 MnT was produced from Chhattisgarh mines. Out of 23.39 MnT iron ore produced from its Chhattisgarh mines, around 10.5 MnT was from its Kirandul mines.
Also, Donimalai mines in Karnataka remains suspended since Nov'18 due to state government's decision to impose 80% premium on the iron ore sales from the mine.
