India: JSW Steel merchant iron ore sourcing down 15% m-o-m in Aug'21

Indian steel major JSW Steel sourced 1.37 million tonnes (mn t) of iron ore from the merchant market in Aug'21. The sourcing decreased by 15% as against 1.61 mn t seen in Jul'21. The figures exclude captive iron ore sourcing.

For Aug'21, the company's average capacity utilisation was 92%, SteelMint learned from the company's recent press release.

The production of flat-rolled products dipped 4% m-o-m to 0.89 mn t. JSW reported a decrease in flat steel production due to the planned shutdown of one of the converters at the Vijayanagar works.

In addition, the company's production in the long-rolled products category was at 0.3 mn t, lower by 2% m-o-m.

Sourcing from Odisha spurts 40% m-o-m in Aug'21

The steelmaker procured 0.07 mn t of iron ore from Odisha-based merchant miners in Jul'21, up 40% as compared to 0.05 t in Jul'21. Key suppliers were Prakash Industries, Essel and Rungta Mines. The sourcing includes procurement of ore for Bhushan Power and Steel.

Sourcing from NMDC (Chhattisgarh) down in Aug'21

JSW Steel's (Dolvi) sourcing from NMDC decreased by 13% to 215,600 t as compared to 250,250 t in Jul'21.

Purchases from Karnataka e-auctions down 18% m-o-m

In Aug'21, JSW Steel sourced around 1.07 mn t of iron ore from the Karnataka e-auctions, down by 18% against 1.3 mn t in Jul'21.

Out of this 1.07 mn t, NMDC supplied 0.52 mn t, up by 8% against 0.48 mn t in Jul'21. It contributed around 49% of the total JSW sourcing. Vedanta stood as the second-largest supplier to JSW Steel at 0.35 mn t, stable against the previous month.

JSW Steel's iron ore imports continue to remain nil

JSW Steel's iron ore imports stood at nil for Aug'21. JSW Steel imported 79,540 t of iron ore from Finland in Nov'20.
