India: Hindalco to invest INR 2,450 crore in copper projects in Gujarat
...
Hindalco Industries, Aditya Birla Group's flagship metals company, is set to invest INR 2,450 crore in two copper projects in Gujarat, including an e-waste recycling plant at Dahej. This facility will process 300,000-350,000 tonnes of scrap annually and recover 50,000 tonnes of copper in Phase 1. The overall production target is 200,000 tonnes.
Copper smelting capacity at Dahej to be boosted
Additionally, Hindalco plans to expand its existing copper smelting operations at Dahej by 50-60%. The facility, already producing half a million tonnes of copper annually, will add 250,000-280,000 tonnes of capacity to meet the growing Indian demand for copper rods. This expansion would make Dahej one of the largest copper smelting complexes outside China.
INR 450 crore marked for copper tube factory in Vadodara
The company is also investing INR 450 crore in a new copper tube factory in Waghodia, Vadodara. This plant, set to produce inner groove copper tubes used in air conditioners and refrigeration systems, will have an initial capacity of 25,000 tonnes (t), with expansion plans for up to 75,000 t over the coming years.
Hindalco kickstarts advanced copper alloys production
Hindalco has started manufacturing advanced copper alloys, including copper-silver and copper-magnesium, to meet the demands of India's expanding high-speed rail network. These alloys are essential for producing stronger, high-conductivity wires required for trains operating beyond 130 kilometres/hour (km/h).
This diversified investment is expected to strengthen Hindalco's presence in India's copper industry, reduce import dependence, and support the country's infrastructure and industrial growth.
