India: Finish Long Steel Imports Down over 60% M-o-M in Apr'20

Finish long steel imports in India plunged by over 60% to 15,736 MT in Apr'20 as compared to 40,378 MT in Mar'20, as per customs data maintained by SteelMint. Also on a yearly basis, imports drifted down by 58.5% in Apr'20 as compared to 37,948 MT in Apr'19.
Factor behind decline in imports could be decline in domestic steel demand post imposition of lockdown in India which began from 25th Mar'20.
Commodity wise- Under finish long steel commodities, following HS codes have been considered - Bar & Rod (HS Code 7213 & 7214), MS Wire (HS Code 7217) along with Angle & Shapes (HS Code 7215 & 7216).
-- Rebar imports registered at 4,925 MT in Apr'20 diminished by around 81% against 25,668 MT in Mar'20.
-- Wire rod 6,799 MT in Apr'20 decreased by around 31% as against 9,842 MT in Mar'20.
-- Structure registered at 4,011 MT in Apr'20 also down by 17.6% as compared to 4,868 MT in Mar'20.

Unload Port wise- JNPT port registered the largest share in imports at 7,578 MT in Apr'20 up marginally by 1.2% as against 7,486 MT in Mar'20. Other major ports for finish long steel imports were Chennai & Mumbai.
