India: Copper imports drop nearly 15% m-o-m in Oct'22

India's copper imports fell by 14% m-o-m in October 2022. Imports including ore, scrap, semi-finished, finished long and finished flat products were recorded at 185,264 t, down 14% m-o-m as against 215,214 t in September.

Imports had been recorded at 150,016 t in October 2021 and, therefore, imports rose by 23% y-o-y in October this year, as per SteelMint data.

Sub-commodity wise shipments

Copper ore/concentrate imports were down at 109,099 t in October, down 28% from 152,538 t in September.

Imports of semi finished products rose sharply by 70% to 32,129 t in October from 18,878 t in September.

Copper scrap imports saw a marginal rise of 2% m-o-m in October to 25,047 t from 24,633 t in September.

Finished product shipments were largely stable, with a slight fall of 1% m-o-m in October at 18,988 t from 19,165 t in September.

Country-wise imports

  • Exports from Indonesia rise: Export volumes stood at 40,250 t in October, sharply higher from 117 t in the previous month. Similarly, export volumes increased by 1% y-o-y from 40,111 t in October 2021.

  • Exports from Chile down m-o-m: Chile's export volumes fell to 39,749 t in October as against 89,969 t in the previous month, down 56% m-o-m. However, shipments increased sharply compared to October last year.

  • Exports from Tanzania increase m-o-m: Exports from Tanzania to India was up 102% m-o-m to 13,481 t in October from 6,682 t in September. Volumes rose by 73% y-o-y from 7,780 t in October 2021.
