India: CIL's raw coal production edges up by 3% y-o-y in H1FY'25

Coal India Limited (CIL) witnessed a slight 3% spike in raw coal production to 341.35 million tonnes (mnt) in H1FY'25 (April-September 2024) against 332.90 mnt in H1FY'24, as per its latest half-yearly results. The producer, India's largest in the coal segment, increased its offtake by 2% from 360.68 mnt in H1FY'24 to 366.21 mnt in H1FY'25.

• Segment-wise sales

  • Fuel supply agreement (FSA): Volumes stayed relatively stable at 320.62 mnt in H1FY'25 compared to 322.17 mnt in H1FY'24. However, revenue inched down due to a 2.80% decrease in average realisation to INR 1,495.66/t in H1FY'25 from INR 1,538.86/tonne (t) in the corresponding period last year (CPLY).
    
    
  • E-Auction: This category saw a 16.64% reduction in volume from 38.28 mnt in H1FY'24 to 31.91 mnt in H1FY'25. Additionally, the average realisation dropped by 26.08% to INR 2,434.63/t in H1FY'25 from INR 3,293.64/t in the CPLY, dragging down the total revenue in this segment.
    
    

  
  
  

• Washed coal

  • Washed coking coal: Production experienced a slight 9.82% increase from 1.12 mnt in H1FY'24 to 1.23 mnt in H1FY'25. A minor rise in revenue and drop in realisation were also observed.
    
    
  • Washed non-coking coal: Output increased by 10.87% to 3.57 mnt in H1FY'25 from 3.22 mnt in the CPLY, though average realisation decreased.
