ArcelorMittal/Nippon Steel India (AM/NSI) plans to expand its annual crude steel production capacity at its Hazira works by 6 million tonnes per annum (mntpa) to 15 mntpa by 2026. An investment of INR 410 billion will be made for the installation of blast furnace and hot-rolling mills. This will drive the mill closer to the goal of attaining global crude steel capacity of 100 mnt.

New facilities to be installed at Hazira works:

  • 2 blast furnaces with annual capacity of 7 mntpa (internal volume of 4,500 cubic meters).

  • 1 pellet plant of 3 mntpa capacity.

  • 2 sintering plants of 6 mntpa capacity.

  • 3 coke ovens of 2.1 mntpa capacity.

  • 3 converters of 6 mntpa capacity.

  • 2 continuous casting machines (2 strand) of 6 mntpa capacity.

  • 1 hot-rolling machine of 5.5 mntpa capacity.

The blast furnace No. 2 and hot-strip mills (HSM) are scheduled to be completed by H2CY25, while the blast furnace No. 3 is expected to be completed by H1CY26. In addition, for further expansion, negotiations for the acquisition of land in Kendrapara and Paradeep in Odisha are under progress. The expansion at Hazira works and an addition of a new plant in the state will add 30 mnt, which will scale up the company's global crude steel production capacity to around 85 mnt.

Furthermore, the acquisition of port and power infrastructure of Essar Group by AM/NS India is expected to be completed by the end of this year, which will enhance logistics network and meet electricity demand at their steel plants.
