Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) scheduled an auction from its Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh for steel LD slag auction on 10 February, 2023.
The offered quantity is around 40,000 tonnes and the bidding strategy will be online sealed bid followed by forward auction (with Yankee method).
In the steel industry, LD slag is a waste product, and primary steel mills openly dispose of this material for free to a governmental contractor for land filling purposes.
Some agencies or recyclers tasted the chemical composition of this material and found two imported sectors.
Agriculture: In agriculture, slags can be used as fertilisers and corrective of soil acidity. Slags are calcium and magnesium silicates, which showed neutralising action due to SiO32. Additionally, steel slags have been used as a low-cost source to supply Si to rice plants.
Road construction: Such slag is a valuable raw material for preparation of macadam materials and mineral binders serving as a base for asphalt concrete mixtures and manufacturing of cement emulsions, which are widely used in road paving. Surat has become the first city in the country to get a processed steel slag (industrial waste) road.
