Total imported scrap arrival at Indian ports in the first two weeks of May dropped by 61% to 123,790 tonnes (t) compared to 316,416 t seen in the same period in April, as per vessel line-up data maintained with SteelMint.
Region-wise scrap arrivals
North: The northern region received 49,450 t of scrap in the first two weeks of May, which was 58% less than 116,881 t received in April. Kilarpur ICD, Chawapayal ICD, and Pithampur ICD accounted for 57% of total arrivals. The top importers in this region were Jaideep Ispat with 6,329 t and Amba Shakti Group with 2,118 t.
West: The western region received 44,279 t of scrap in the first two weeks of May, which was 67% lower than 132,988 t received in April. The major ports were Mundra and Nhava Sheva, which accounted for 71% of total arrivals. HAQ Steels was the largest buyer in the region with 2,909 t, followed by SMW Ispat with 1,928 t.
South: The southern region received 27,034 t of scrap in the first two weeks of May, a 48% decline from the 51,572 t received in April. Chennai Port accounted for 83% of total scrap arrivals in the southern region at 22,514 t. Prakash Ferrous and J R Metal Chennai Ltd were the top recipients in this region.
East: The eastern region had lower scrap arrivals compared to other regions. Total arrivals in the first two weeks of May stood at 3,026 t, with Jajpur ICD receiving 1,887 t and Kolkata Port receiving 1,139 t.
Grade-wise scrap arrivals-
- HMS accounted for the major volume of imports, with 74,963 t assessed in the first two weeks of May, or 61% of total volume.
- Total LMS grade received was 13,920 t.
- MS shredded grade accounted for 10,962 t in the second week of May.
