Central China's Henan province released a Provincial Carbon-Peaking Implementation Plan for Industrial Sectors to accelerate the green and low-carbon transformation and achieve carbon peak goals in key industrial sectors such as steel and non-ferrous metals, announced its Department of Industry and Information Technology on March 22.
Under the Plan, the province will see its energy consumption per value-added of all industrial enterprises above the designated size drop by 18% from 2020 to 2025 and carbon dioxide emissions in industrial sectors peak by 2030.
The Plan also sets energy-saving and carbon emission goals for key industrial sectors including steel, petrochemical, and non-ferrous metals to promote industrial transformation and upgrading in the province.
For the steel industry, the plan requires that by 2025 the province's crude steel produced from electric furnace mills will account for about 15% of its total crude steel output.
Henan will vigorously optimize energy structure, advance low-carbon steelmaking technologies, and encourage the use of electric furnaces and high-end steel products, the Plan notes.
As for non-ferrous metals, the province will consolidate the present electrolytic aluminum production capacity, improve the scrap recycling, sorting, and processing network, and promote access to clean energy alternatives.
